Honest Respondent Technology

What is Honest Respondent Technology, and how does it work?

To make test results more reliable, you can activate a mechanism that monitors browser tab movements during test-taking.

If any movements or tab switching is detected, the Honest Respondent issues warnings or blocks the test, according to the settings of your choice.

If a respondent leaves the test, they will see a warning. Their test access may also be blocked after exceeding a set number of such incidents. If you decide to block a test after a set number of warnings, you will know exactly who the culprit was.

How to conduct online test with non-intrusive proctoring?

To set the Honest Respondent Technology and ensure a fair and secure testing experience, follow these steps:

  1. In Test configuration menu, select Test access tab.

  2. Find the "Honest Respondent Technology" section, at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Choose your proctoring option: Enable warnings only or Enable warnings and test block.

If you select the Enable warnings only option, respondents who attempt to leave the test page will see a warning.

The Enable warnings and test block option allows you to set the maximum number of warnings for each respondent in the 'Max. allowed number of times a respondent can leave test page' field. Once this limit is reached, Testportal will block the test and the respondent will be unable to return to it.

    4. Confirm your settings by clicking the green Save button lockated at the bottom of the screen.

The mechanism also works for tests shared via Microsoft Teams.

Leaving test page unintentionally

When the Honest Respondent Technology is enabled, respondents are informed about it on the test start page. They are advised to focus on their tests only, to disable all system notifications and close applications running in the background.

It can happen, however, that the respondent leaves the test page unintentionally. This can be caused by adjusting the volume on their device, clicking outside the test page or turning on the taskbar. If the test is being completed on a mobile device, any notifications or calls may also cause a warning to be issued.

Testportal offers many features that guarantee the reliability of assessment results. Read about them here.
